Instant Message Spam On The Rise

by Sufian on October 31, 2008

I use a wonderful all-in-one instant messaging app called Adium which allows me to sign on with my AIM, MSN, Yahoo, GTalk accounts. Lately on my MSN and Yahoo accounts I’ve been getting 5+ spam messages per day (see below). It’s really irritating because on both MSN and Yahoo I have it the settings on such that only people on my lists are able to contact me.

IM Spam on MSN

I’m beginning to think this is a client-only setting. If that’s correct these respective companies need to change that and store the settings as they do my contact lists such that I can sign on from anywhere using any device and I do not get hit with the crap that I’ve already blocked.

Never used a chat client which affects messages from non contact users therefore I don’t see this spam… and thank god too – my filters are working hard enough on email without having to worry about chat clients.
