Steve, did you noticed the comments in that Gizmodo article? One guy says he's had "free" wifi in China @ 'bucks for around 2 years now. Talk about shady business...

That would be a good idea. Offer like a wifi card which expires after a certain length of time used (say 2 hours) and is replenished when the customer purchases another item and presents this card.

Starbucks need to wake up to the industry and smell the air.

They sub out their wireless to someone like T-Mobile, so therefore if you want a coffee and a surf on the net, you have to be a) either a t-mobile customer or b) willing to pay some ripoff fee when you just paid over the odds for a drink

In the UK mc-donalds offer free wifi to all of their customers and their coffee & latte is cheaper too. Whilst you may not get the atmosphere of feeling ripped off and being a 'posh' person, you do get a damn good deal.

Other coffee chains and pubs in the UK are catching on to this and offering free wifi to customers who purchase something -- a lot are giving them a 'code' which is like for an hours access - very reasonable I think.

Starbucks are behind the times and they wonder why they're losing money.....
