Windows Mobile 6 on the T-Mobile Dash

Two weeks ago T-Mobile officially released a ROM update to upgrade their smartphones from WM5 to WM6. They had the exclusive and got it first from Microsoft.

I installed WM6 and started to configure it to my use. The new features and applications (such as Voice Command) are very cool. I had to install a 3rd party app before to do the same thing. One thing that I had issues with was e-mail. I had all of my e-mail accounts hooked up on WM5 and after the upgrade the auto send/receive stopped working.

After many rounds of back and forth emails with T-Mobile where I got no where because every tech I communicated with just said to turn the phone off and back on (when will they learn that is not the fix-all solution?!) I started to poke around the operating system.

After making some modifications to some files as well as settings I was able to get my email working as it had been before. For some bizzare reason Microsoft decided to put in a little alert notifying people about roaming. This alert did not apply in my case because 1) I wasn’t roaming; and 2) TMO doesn’t charge for roaming.

My send/receive would only work if I manually initiated the process having to click “OK” on that alert. The fix to get rid of the alert is to go into your email account settings to the screen where it asks you the interval you want to check for new mail. If you go into the advanced settings on that screen there is an option you can check to always send/receive even if roaming. Once you have that option checked you won’t see that stupid little alert anymore.

Now, the only problem I’m having is sycing my contacts/calendar on my dash with my address book and ical on my macpro. Mark/space’s Missing Sync is what I was using for WM5, but since WM6 is not supported yet I’m looking for alternative solutions. If you know of any please let me know!

Hi Sufian,

I am a WM5 user (Moto Q, Palm Treo 700wx), just can’t figure out how to enable auto send/receive option for my gmail account on my PocketPC …. there is nothing in account options to do auto-send. How were you making this work on WM5 , or is it better done on WM6 ?

Will appreciate any pointer as this issue has been bugging me for many days now. Your blog entry appears to provide a ray of hope …

Thanks,
Rahul

Hi Rahul,

I now use the Nokia E90, so I’m a bit rusty on my WM5 memory, however, if you went into the settings of your account there should be an option to connect every X minutes. If that is enabled your device should connect to gmail.
